Overview:

Quinnipiac University's College of Arts & Sciences invites applications for a Laboratory Operations Manager to be responsible for the overall organization, preparation, and routine operation of instructional laboratories. The successful candidate will support the teaching laboratories for the Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Chemistry and Physical Sciences, including the management of chemicals, hazardous waste, and gas cylinders. In this role, you will collaborate with faculty lab coordinators, staff, and vendors, assist with hazardous materials management and care of plastinated human donors, and address issues in a timely fashion to ensure the smooth operation of laboratory courses in Anatomy and Physiology, courses for non-majors, and other biology electives. This is a full-time staff position (12 months).

Candidates with appropriate credentials may have the opportunity to teach during the academic year.

Responsibilities:
  • Ensure that all necessary equipment, supplies, reagents, specimens, and models for Anatomy and Physiology and Biology courses for non-majors are prepared and placed in the laboratories prior to each week’s lab. Breakdown and cleanup labs at the end of each week
  • Coordinate the maintenance, repair, servicing, and cleaning of laboratory equipment and models, to ensure smooth operation of Anatomy and Physiology and Biology for non-majors laboratories. In some cases, this includes working with facilities, Information Technology, or arranging for vendor service technicians to quickly resolve any problems that may arise
  • Build and maintain a comprehensive inventory of laboratory equipment, and use it to develop a maintenance schedule and predicted date of replacement
  • Maintain an inventory of gas cylinders and chemicals for the Departments of Biological Sciences and Chemistry and Physical Sciences and supervise their proper storage
  • During the summer and winter breaks, restock supplies in all biology teaching laboratories, and possibly teach summer courses and/or assist with summer programs
  • Coordinate for the Department of Biological Sciences, and assist the Department of Chemical and Physical Sciences and the Director of Environmental Health and Fire Safety, with the retrieval and storage of all supplies and equipment for teaching laboratories to ensure their smooth operation.
  • Coordinate the proper collection and disposal of hazardous waste for the laboratories in conjunction with the Director of Environmental Health and Fire Safety
  • Assist with the care of plastinated human donors including communications with the vendor
  • Assist with interviewing, hiring, scheduling, and supervising work-study students
  • Contribute to the lab safety and chemical hygiene training for student workers and faculty, and with maintaining compliance for EPA and OSHA regulations, in the College of Arts and Sciences
  • Test lab protocols and equipment in advance of laboratory sessions after making necessary reagents and solutions. Provide feedback to faculty lab coordinators as needed
  • Assist faculty in the development of teaching materials, training with new equipment, and the testing and operation of instructional laboratory protocols and experiments
  • Communicate, collaborate, and maintain working relationships with the faculty lab coordinators regarding lab protocols, policies, and operations
  • Work with Information Technology and the faculty lab coordinators to review and update laboratory computer software annually
  • Assist with graduate lab course preparation as time permits
  • Other duties may be required to support the evolving needs of the College of Arts and Sciences
Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in biology or related field required
  • Master's degree preferred (and required for teaching)
Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years of experience in lab operations
  • Familiarity with  laboratory and chemical safety, safety training, proper chemical storage, and disposal of hazardous waste
  • Excellent computer, organizational and interpersonal skills to manage department purchases, to operate and maintain equipment, train and supervise student workers, work with faculty lab coordinators and, in general, provide a positive contribution to the College of Arts & Sciences community
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations and a commitment to diversity and inclusion
