Overview:

The College of Arts and Sciences at Quinnipiac University is pleased to announce a cluster hiring initiative in the area of STEM inclusivity, aligned with the college's commitment to academic excellence and with its dedication to creating a more equitable future in the STEM disciplines.

The following description is for the teaching faculty position in mathematics, at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor, with a primary home in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The area of specialization is open and a joint appointment with another academic unit in the College is possible, depending on the candidate’ expertise and interests. This is a full-time 9.5-month, benefits-eligible, non-tenure track, on-campus, on-ground position. We are looking for faculty who are passionate about STEM inclusivity and want to take a leadership role in curricular improvement and in the development and implementation of innovative teaching strategies for introductory STEM classes across the College. We aim to increase retention and success for historically marginalized students in STEM majors and improve quantitative literacy for all URM students.  We welcome and encourage applications from candidates of all backgrounds. The appointment is expected to start in August 2024.

In addition, the College of Arts and Sciences offers 32 undergraduate minors, an MS in Molecular and Cell Biology, and the additional accelerated undergraduate/graduate programs: 3+1 and 4+1 BS/MS programs in Molecular and Cell Biology, 3+3 BA or BS/JD degree, 3+1 BA in Data Science/MS or MA in Communications, 3+1 BS in Data Science/MBA, 3+1 BS in Economics/MS in Accounting, Business Analytics, or Journalism or MBA, 3+1 BA in Theater/MBA or MA in Communications, and 3+2 BA or BS/MSW. Students can also complete a 5-year BA/BS and MA in Teaching in the following secondary education fields: Biology, English, History, and Math.

Responsibilities:

  • Take a leadership role in curricular improvement and in the development of innovative teaching strategies for introductory STEM classes across the College.
  • Teach introductory mathematics and statistics courses, and/or contribute to teaching upper-level classes according to the candidate’s qualifications and to the department and college needs. The standard teaching load for teaching faculty in the college is four, three-credit courses per semester (12 credits or instructional hours per semester). However, the successful candidate will be eligible to receive two course releases per year for work to be performed to enhance teaching and learning at the institution. 
  • Collaborate with the related position in chemistry to develop initiatives to enhance math skills important in the quantitative aspects of chemistry.
  • Work collaboratively to develop workshops to help train full-time and part-time faculty on inclusive teaching strategies aimed at increasing retention and improving graduation rates.
  • Enhance STEM inclusivity in their classes through inclusive teaching pedagogies and high impact practices that are relevant for their discipline.
  • Guide, advise, and mentor students academically and professionally.
  • Engage in service activities to help advance the mission and values of the university, such as participating in department, college and university meetings and committee work.
  • Support Quinnipiac University’s commitment to an inclusive environment. 

Education Requirements:

  • PhD in Mathematics, Statistics, or closely related field; master’s degree with FSA or FCAS also considered.  Actuarial fellows with a master’s degree will be considered.

Qualifications:

  • Experience and expertise in leading curricular improvement and in the development of innovative teaching strategies for introductory STEM classes, and evidence of using such strategies in their own classes.
  • Ability to teach introductory mathematics and statistics courses, and to contribute to teaching upper-level classes in the candidate’s area of specialization. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with chemistry faculty to develop initiatives to enhance math skills important in the quantitative aspects of chemistry.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across the institution to develop workshops to help train full-time and part-time faculty on inclusive teaching strategies aimed at increasing retention and improving graduation rates.
