Overview:

The Department of Justice and Law in the College of Arts and Sciences at Quinnipiac University is seeking a dynamic and student-centered Legal Studies/Law in Society instructor to teach at the undergraduate level. Applicants from a variety of law-related disciplines will be considered for this full-time teaching position, with a strong preference for those with experience teaching legal research and writing. The appointment will be as an Assistant Teaching Professor of Legal Studies with expectations for teaching, advising students, and engaging in service activities and committees that strengthen the program, department, college, and university community. The anticipated start date is Fall 2024.

This position directly supports the Law in Society major in the Department of Justice and Law, a program that has demonstrated strong enrollment in recent years. The Department of Justice and Law includes programs in Legal Studies/Law in Society, Criminal Justice, and Justice and Community Engagement. This collaborative and student-centered department has a strong sense of community, with faculty committed to expanding both curricular and cocurricular engagement, and working together in both teaching and research.

The position will coordinate the required methods sequence in legal research and writing, and teach the experiential learning internship class that accompanies the capstone internship experience. The Law in Society major blends academic instruction, legal theory, and legal practice, and includes legal scholars, practitioners, and practicing attorneys. Moreover, depending on the background and qualifications of the successful candidate, this position may support teaching other classes in our interdisciplinary department of Justice and Law, including Justice and Community Engagement, and/or Criminal Justice.

Responsibilities:

  • Primarily teach the Law in Society methods classes of legal research and writing, taught sequentially during the fall and spring semesters
  • Teach the legal studies internship class that accompanies the immersive internship experience with the possibility of other courses as needed
  • Hold regular office hours for students
  • Guide, advise, and mentor students academically and professionally
  • Engage in service to support the program, department, college and university, which includes attending weekly department meetings and other university meetings as required
  • Work with community partners to strengthen the internship opportunities for students

Education Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor is required at time of appointment to be hired at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor of Legal Studies. Any additional degrees, such as an MA/PhD. in Law, Legal Studies, Law in Society, or a closely related field will add additional value for interdisciplinary opportunities

Qualifications:

  • Ability to effectively teach undergraduate-level classes
  • Ability to teach the core methods classes of legal research and writing
  • Ability to teach the internship class that accompanies the internship experience
  • Commitment to participating in a collaborative teaching environment
  • Commitment to inclusive teaching and community
  • Willingness to work with community partners to establish meaningful internship opportunities for our students

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Can demonstrate success in teaching at the undergraduate level
  • Has relevant experience with legal research and writing
  • Has the ability to communicate effectively with legal supervisors and a range of community organizations
