Overview: Quinnipiac University seeks a motivated, results-oriented, and highly collaborative professional to join the institution as the Assistant Director of Recreation in the Recreation Operations area. Reporting to the Associate Director of Recreation who oversees all operations, the successful candidate will help manage operations across multiple fitness facilities, including the Mt. Carmel Recreation and Wellness Center (RecWell), North Haven Fitness Center, York Hill Fitness Center, and E-Sports Lab. The Assistant Director will also support staff training and development, handle budget management, and assist with revenue generation systems while serving as a liaison for communication and marketing initiatives, overseeing fitness center programming, and managing the undergraduate communications team.

Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate with the Associate Director on the operations of the Mount Carmel Recreation and Wellness Center, a 45,000 square foot facility that includes a Fitness Center, community meeting spaces, and a Demonstration Kitchen.
  • Manage the operations of satellite facilities, including the North Haven Fitness Center, York Hill Fitness Center, and E-Sports Lab.
  • Support the Associate Director in training and developing staff at the Fitness Centers and E-Sports Lab.
  • Manage payroll for employees assigned to satellite facilities.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate a team of approximately 80 undergraduate employees.
  • Assist in coordinating meetings and events for campus departments at the Recreation and Wellness Center through the EMS system.
  • Assist the Associate Director with student employee evaluations and personnel management.
  • Manage the submission and tracking of work orders for satellite recreation facilities.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Office of Recreation and university for communication, website updates, social media management, and other marketing initiatives.
  • Oversee the undergraduate communications team, including a student photographer and graphic designer.
  • Oversee RecWell and Fitness Center-specific programming.
  • Manage budgets with direction from the Associate Director, handling transactions, transfers, and communication with the budget office.
  • Assist Recreation leadership with equipment and lawn game checkouts and rentals for the campus community.
  • Assist the Associate Director in managing systems for revenue generation, memberships, locker rentals, trip fees, and other point-of-service functions.
  • Conduct weekly “punch list” walkthroughs of the facility with or at the discretion of the Associate Director, using a checklist to generate discussion with staff and follow up on work orders as needed.
  • Assist in managing assessments of the student employee experience.
  • Cover Open Houses and other yield/orientation events on behalf of the Office of Recreation.
Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Master's degree in student affairs, exercise science, physical education, kinesiology, recreation administration, sport management, leisure studies, or comparable area preferred
Qualifications:
  • 1-3 years of experience in fitness center operations, recreation, or student affairs required.  Graduate assistantship may count towards years of experience where applicable
  • Must be committed to a student-centered approach, adaptable to changing institutional needs and priorities, and possess excellent organizational, communication, and administrative skills
  • A demonstrated track record of creative problem solving and a high-level of productivity and performance
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, budget management, supervision, strategic thinking, and organizational abilities/skills
  • Demonstrated capacity to produce results through a collaborative, team-oriented approach
  • High degree of self-motivation, persistence, and follow-through
  • An ability to engage students in the learning process through a high level of personal contact
  • A positive attitude with high standards of personal integrity and professional competence
  • Ability and willingness to work within evening and weekend hours as needed
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications (or ability to obtain the certifications upon hire)
  • NIRSA member preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as a high level of organizational skills and use of current technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations and a commitment to diversity and inclusion
