Are you ready to take the helm of our award-winning recreation department at Quinnipiac University? We are seeking an energetic and visionary leader to serve as our next Director of Recreation, contributing to a culture of wellbeing and our vibrant campus life. Quinnipiac University boasts three state-of-the-art fitness facilities, including our brand new Recreation and Wellness Center, completed in 2023. As the Director of Recreation, you'll be at the forefront of these facilities, ensuring they continue to serve as a key location for all on our campus. You'll also provide support to 21 club sports teams, intramural programs, our new 4-lane climbing wall and outdoor adventures programs, and our nationally ranked Division 1 MAAC esports throughout their multiple game variants.

As the Director of Recreation, you will be responsible for the full spectrum of program management. This includes strategic budget allocation and oversight as well as the recruitment, hiring, and training of a dedicated team, managing 3 full-time staff members and coordinating the efforts of over 125 graduate and undergraduate para-professional student employees.

Responsibilities:
  • Oversee and direct the daily operations of multiple fitness, wellness, and recreational facilities across all three campuses including the Recreation & Wellness Center, York Hill Fitness Center, Esports Lab, and North Haven Fitness Center
  • Supervise all operations of 21 club sport teams, which include local and regional competitive games with various schools in the region and nationally each year
  • Provide direct advisement, coaching, and support to Quinnipiac’s nationally ranked and recognized division 1 MAAC esports team, often supporting their competitions in a variety of championship matches across the country on behalf of the institution
  • Provide direction and supervision to the recruitment, hiring, and training of 3 professional and 125 student staff, both directly and through indirect reports
  • Oversee the development and deployment of engaging team, individual, and special event intramural opportunities for students, faculty, and staff throughout the academic year with weekday, evening, and weekend leagues offered
  • Partner with Development staff to identify and deliver fundraising opportunities for club sport members and teams each year
  • Partner with Admissions to develop and implement strategies related to recruiting students who will play club sports and/or esports at Quinnipiac, including high school visits and other high‐visibility recruitment opportunities
  • Direct the allocation of budgets to support all areas within the Office of Recreation.
  • Serve as a liaison to the Athletics Department on all matters related to recreational facilities overseen by their staff
  • Partner with Recreation staff to develop, organize, and deliver all trainings for Club Sports Officers while ensuring their team schedules are maintained and rosters are up to date
  • Ensure staff coverage at all club sport home competitions through working with professional staff on a rotation system throughout the academic year
  • Partner with local recreational facilities to ensure club sports teams have adequate off‐campus spaces to utilize for practice and competition when not available on campus
  • Evaluate and prepare recreation facilities for university‐wide events according to departmental, divisional, and university risk management policies and procedures
  • Ensure the effective development and implementation of effective marketing and promotional strategies for all aspects of Recreation
  • Oversee a variety of “open skate” opportunities for campus community to utilize the On‐campus arena for free skating during the year
  • Contribute to the mission, vision and direction of campus life through collaboration and student development
  • Coordinate all aspects of the Recreation Information Table and present at Open Houses, Admitted Student Day, Junior Open House, New Student Orientation, and Graduate Student Orientation
  • Collaborate with campus partners who share spaces in the Recreation and Wellness center, including Chartwells and Hartford Health Care, to ensure smooth and aligned operations throughout the year
  • Other duties as assigned
Education Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Recreation Administration, Student Affairs, Exercise & Sports Science, Athletic Leadership, Student Personnel, or related field
Qualifications:
  • Seven or more years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience leading comprehensive recreation programs, sports management and services, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
  • Strong knowledge of safety and risk management as they relate to recreation is required
  • An understanding of student development and the ability to lead and supervise professional staff, student staff and club officers are required
  • Attention to detail and the ability to multitask are required, as well as strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations and a commitment to diversity and inclusion
