Overview: Quinnipiac University invites applications for the position of Public Safety Sergeant. Under the direction of the Assistant Chief of Public Safety, the Public Safety Sergeant shall provide a safe and secure environment for faculty, staff, students and guests of the University while protecting the assets of the University.

Responsibilities:

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Supervise Public Safety Officers
  • Provide assistance in emergency alert situations and maintaining communications with outside emergency agencies
  • Investigate all crime and violations that occur on campus and report finding’s to determine action to be taken
  • Orient, develop, supervise and evaluate those officers reporting to him/her
  • Request supplies, manpower, and equipment as needed and as approved by the Chief
  • Communicate the events and activities on campus with the Assistant Chief/Chief
  • Available to work extra shifts that may arise due to illness, vacations, special events, etc., at all campus locations
  • Campus Services: provide overall assistance to the Quinnipiac Community
  • Residential Life/Student Affairs: provide assistance with incidents or investigations on campus
  • Parking Enforcement: monitor parking enforcement during shift
  • Administrative: Supervise all administrative duties during shift

Specific Responsibilities

  • Coordinate all personnel functions, duties, and policies of the department
  • Protect the safety and property of the students, faculty and staff
  • Enforce parking and traffic regulations
  • Provide control for any outside functions on campus
  • Provide assistance in emergency alert situations and maintaining communications with outside emergency agencies
  • Investigate all crime and violations that occur on campus and reporting findings to determine action to be taken
  • Secure all lost property and attempting to locate the owner
  • Orient, develop, supervise and evaluate those staff reporting to him/her
  • Keeping current in the field of law enforcement
  • Request supplies, manpower, and equipment as needed and as approved by the Chief
  • Communicate the events and activities on campus with the Assistant Chief/Chief
  • Supervise full-time and academic year officers
  • Maintaining confidentiality on all departmental matters
  • Residential Life/Student Affairs: provide assistance with incidents or investigations on campus
  • Parking Enforcement: monitor parking enforcement during shift
  • Administrative: Supervise all administrative duties during shift
  • Submit daily activity log to the Assistant Chief of Public Safety 

Education Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor's degree preferred

Qualifications:

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Candidate must pass extensive background investigation including check for criminal history and psychological evaluation
  • Candidate must pass physical exam and drug test
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills required
  • Excellent interpersonal and human relation skills required
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment and common sense appropriate to the related circumstances
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions and prepare accurate and clear information for comprehensive report preparation
  • Ability to deal with diverse groups of people
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of job related information
  • Ability and willingness to work rotating shifts covering all days of the week and all hours of the day including weekends and holidays

TRAINING REQUIREMENT QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of three years of experience as a full-time Quinnipiac University PS Officer, or a  minimum of 5 years of experience as a law enforcement officer in another law enforcement/public safety organization
  • At least two years of supervisory experience is preferred
  • Familiarization with local law enforcement agencies
  • Knowledge of Departmental Directives and Use of Force policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities
  • No prior or pending disciplinary actions within the last two (2) years

*Note: All candidates must have completed their probationary period with the Quinnipiac University Public Safety Department.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit.
  • Occasionally the employee will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person.
  • Occasionally push or lift items.
  • The employee is directly responsible for safety, wellbeing, and work output.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as the ability to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
